Why I’m glad Trump won this time

So, back in 2020, I *hated* this guy. Coming from my ‘refined’ educational background, I felt ashamed for America for having such a president: one who seemed uncaring of the unity of his country in a time of chaos, whose speech was aggressive and divisive, who mishandled the pandemic and indirectly caused many lives to be lost to it. But when Biden pulled out of this year’s race and I scrutinized the background of Harris’ teammate, I suddenly realized something very important: In the East, I can afford to be open minded while still maintaining my conservative lifestyle because our culture is a “shame-based” culture. We can afford to tolerate inappropriate or shameful behavior as long as it’s done in private, knowing that those who do these things will not aggressively campaign about the “virtue” of their conduct or lifestyle. They know it’s inappropriate and will only ask for tolerance, understanding and love, which I happily give. But they will not change my vocabulary, changing “straight” into “binary”, asking to be called by a thousand different pronouns, aggressively campaigning to change the books read in kindergarten and primary schools. Our thousands-year old culture, which permeates our worldview and conduct, makes sure that people don’t behave this way. But Western culture was built on the foundation of a certain religion (i.e. Christianity), and when people stop being religious, society crumbles, and immorality is suddenly paraded as virtuous. I lived in China for a few years; it is not a religious country, but our ancient culture provides a certain foundation that governs our worldview and behavior, irrespective of people’s individual beliefs. And I realize that this time, Trump is the best choice for America, a country I stayed in for almost 6 years (where I got both my Bachelor’s and Master’s), where I have friends, professors and colleagues who share my concerns. Although, as I’ve said before, I’m so glad I no longer live there! As an idealistic person, it’s important for me that the place I live in closely aligns with my vision and ideals. I’m currently grateful to be living in a diverse and open-minded country, but which has safeguards in place to prevent the occurrence of certain issues. Although America is now merely a chapter in my past, I wish all the best for Trump’s second term; may it go more smoothly than his first, for the sake of his country and all his countrymen!
